Liefhebber van Alberto Giacometti? Institut Giacometti laat zijn werk zien in een imposant art-decopand. En die locatie alleen al is de moeite waard.
Makkelijk te missen
Je loopt er zo voorbij. Rue Victor Schoelcher in de Montparnassewijk (14e arrondissement) – ergens halverwege de Seine en de Périphérique – is niet bepaald een toeristische route. Wel de buurt waar Giacometti zijn hele carrière woonde en werkte. Van begin 20e eeuw tot de Tweede Wereldoorlog was Montparnasse het kloppend hart van het artistieke en intellectuele Parijs.
Maar als je even stilstaat bij huisnummer 5, zie je het: een hôtel particulier uit 1911, gebouwd voor meubelmaker en decorateur Paul Follot. Die bescheiden maar verfijnde art deco-voordeur, omlijst door een poort van minuscule mozaïektegeltjes met goudkleurige accenten… Zullen we aanbellen?
Helaas. De officiële ingang is de wat minder charmante brede deur. Destijds de personeelsingang. Maar eenmaal binnen vergeet je dat meteen. Welkom in het Institut Giacometti.
Het atelier van Giacometti
Rechts zie je direct het gereconstrueerde atelier van Giacometti. De verweerde muurschilderingen zijn van de kunstenaar zelf. Het meubilair ook. En natuurlijk zijn fragiele gips- en kleiwerken.
Wat volgt is een kruipdoorsluipdoorroute door verschillende kamers die je meenemen langs zijn leven en werk. Er hangt ook altijd een wisselexpositie met werk dat zich verhoudt tot Giacometti’s sculpturale kunst. Een kleine bibliotheek ontbreekt niet.
Art nouveau ontmoet art deco
Ondertussen loop je door dit hôtel particulier waar art nouveau en – destijds heel avant-garde – art deco samensmelten. Je ziet prachtige houten lambriseringen met parelmoeren details, en soms zelfs nog de originele stoffen wandbekleding met geometrische dessins. Een verborgen parel.
En straks nog meer
Wil je nóg meer Giacometti? Rond 2028 opent – als het doorgaat – een 6000 vierkante meter groot museum in het 7e arrondissement. De locatie? Het voormalige Gare des Invalides, gebouwd voor de Wereldtentoonstelling van 1900. Van 1946 tot 2018 deed het dienst als hoofdkantoor en terminal van Air France. Weer zo’n parel dus, maar even geduld nog.

A hidden gem in Paris: Institut Giacometti – and what an art deco building!
A fan of Alberto Giacometti? Institut Giacometti displays his work in an impressive art deco building. And that location alone is worth the visit.
Easy to miss
You could easily walk right past it. Rue Victor Schoelcher in the Montparnasse neighborhood (14th arrondissement) – somewhere between the Seine and the Périphérique – isn’t exactly a tourist route. But it is the neighborhood where Giacometti lived and worked throughout his entire career. From the early 20th century until World War II, Montparnasse was the beating heart of artistic and intellectual Paris.
But if you pause at number 5, you’ll see it: an hôtel particulier from 1911, built for furniture maker and decorator Paul Follot. That modest yet refined art deco entrance, framed by a doorway of tiny mosaic tiles with golden accents… Shall we ring the bell?
Unfortunately not. The official entrance is the somewhat less charming wide door. Originally the staff entrance. But once inside, you forget that immediately. Welcome to Institut Giacometti.
Giacometti’s studio
To your right, you immediately see Giacometti’s reconstructed studio. The weathered murals are by the artist himself. The furniture too. And of course, his fragile plaster and clay works.
What follows is a winding route through various rooms that take you through his life and work. There’s also always a rotating exhibition featuring work that relates to Giacometti’s sculptural art. A small library is included as well.
Art nouveau meets art deco
Meanwhile, you walk through this hôtel particulier where art nouveau and art deco – avant-garde at the time – merge together. You see beautiful wooden paneling with mother-of-pearl details, and sometimes even the original fabric wall coverings with geometric patterns. A hidden gem.

Want even more Giacometti? Around 2028 – if all goes according to plan – a 6,000-square-meter museum will open in the 7th arrondissement. The location? The former Gare des Invalides, built for the 1900 World’s Fair. From 1946 to 2018, it served as Air France’s headquarters and terminal. Another gem, but patience required.
