Na meer dan tien jaar in de antiek- en brocantehandel heeft Myra Khargi alles wel eens voorbij zien komen. Van industriële look tot Franse brocante. Maar wat willen mensen nu eigenlijk?

‘Hangoortafeltjes en olielampen, grenenkasten, Franse brocante en antiek, landelijk, de jaren zestig en zeventig, de industriële look…’ somt Myra Khargi op. ‘Ik heb echt alle trends wel langs zien komen.’
En waar is nu vraag naar? Ze denkt even na. ‘Ik heb de indruk dat klanten zoekende zijn naar wat nu in is. Maar tegelijkertijd zie ik klanten die destijds van Franse brocante hielden weer terugkomen.’
Blikvangers voor moderne interieurs
Wat ze zoeken? ‘Unieke stukken zoals bustes. Beter gezegd: blikvangers die het ook in een modern interieur goed doen. Mensen gaan niet meer voor een compleet antiek interieur.’
Zelfs jugendstil is weer helemaal terug. ‘Terwijl dat nog niet zo lang geleden te frivool en te krullerig werd gevonden! En heiligenbeelden – daar blijft altijd vraag naar.’
Oma met sigaret en scherpe blik
Die liefde voor antiek? Die kreeg ze van haar oma mee. ‘Een heel bijzondere vrouw, ze leek een beetje op Annie M.G. Schmidt. Met een sigaret in haar mond vertelde ze verhalen, met een scherpe blik op de mensheid en de wereld.’
Haar oma was decoratrice en blijkbaar goed ook. ‘Mensen stonden voor de ramen om in haar woonkamer te kijken. Helaas heeft ze niet meer meegemaakt dat ik in 2012 mijn winkel opende.’
Corona gooide de boel om
‘Antiek moet je leren kennen, net als kunst,’ zegt Myra. ‘Als je het verhaal erachter kent, de datering, waar het voor gebruikt werd – dan ontstaat ineens de romantiek eromheen.’
Maar inkopen is een stuk lastiger geworden. ‘De Franse en Belgische handelaren waar ik altijd inkocht, verkochten hun spullen vanuit schuren, voor mij mooie prijzen.’ Tot corona kwam. ‘Toen ontdekten ze dat ze ook via internet konden verkopen, tegen veel hogere prijzen. Ik snap die handelaren wel hoor, maar voor Nederlandse handelaren zoals ik is de inkoop een stuk moeilijker geworden. De ‘prijzen liggen echt een stuk hoger dan een paar jaren geleden.’
Een zwak voor Napoleon III
Dus zoekt Myra overal en nergens. ‘En gelukkig komt er nog veel op mijn pad. Soms heb je een blikvanger nodig in je winkel, die geeft sfeer. Maar die is meestal als eerste weg!’ Ze lacht. ‘Soms zet ik er een hoge prijs op, in de hoop dat het langer blijft staan. Maar nee, dan is het toch alweer binnen een dag verkocht.’
Zelf houdt ze van Napoleon- en Empire-stijlen. ‘Neem Napoleon III, dat zijn al die donkere, bijna zwarte meubels. Omdat mahoniehout destijds Frankrijk niet uit mocht, ging men ze donker politoeren.’
In de winkel staat een setje waar ze verliefd op is: een Napoleon III-tafeltje met twee stoelen. ‘Het staat er al een tijdje. Nederlanders houden het liefst van dingen waar ze wat mee kunnen. Kijk, je hangt een spiegel op of een schilderij. Maar zo’n setje… Het is misschien niet zo praktisch, maar als je het een beetje decoreert, dan kan ik er zo enorm van genieten.’

After more than ten years in the antiques and brocante trade, Myra Khargi has seen it all — from the industrial look to French brocante. But what do people actually want these days?
‘Gateleg tables and oil lamps, pine cupboards, French brocante and antiques, rustic style, the sixties and seventies, the industrial look…’ Myra Khargi lists. ‘I’ve really seen every trend pass by.’
And what’s in demand now? She pauses for a moment. “I get the impression that customers are searching for what’s currently in. But at the same time, I see customers who once loved French brocante coming back again.”
Eye-catchers for modern interiors
What are they looking for? ‘Unique pieces, like busts. Or rather: statement pieces that also work well in a modern interior. People don’t go for a completely antique interior anymore.’
Even Jugendstil is making a full comeback. ‘Not so long ago it was still considered too frivolous and ornate! And religious statues — there’s always demand for those.’
Grandma with a cigarette and a sharp eye
That love for antiques? She inherited it from her grandmother. ‘A very special woman, she looked a bit like Annie M.G. Schmidt. With a cigarette in her mouth, she would tell stories, with a sharp eye on humanity and the world.”
Her grandmother was a decorator, and apparently a good one. “People would stand in front of the windows to look into her living room. Sadly, she didn’t live to see me open my shop in 2012.’
Covid turned everything upside down
‘Antiques are something you have to get to know, just like art,’ says Myra. ‘Once you know the story behind it, the date, what it was used for — suddenly the romance around it appears.’
But sourcing has become much harder. ‘The French and Belgian dealers I used to buy from sold their goods out of barns, at prices that worked well for me.’ Then Covid came. ‘They discovered they could also sell online, for much higher prices. I can’t blame them, but for Dutch dealers like me, buying stock has become much more difficult. Prices are definitely much higher than a few years ago.’
A soft spot for Napoleon III
So Myra looks everywhere and anywhere. ‘Luckily, a lot still comes my way. Sometimes you need a real eye-catcher in your shop — it gives atmosphere. But that’s usually the first thing to sell.’ She laughs. ‘Sometimes I put a high price on it, hoping it’ll stay longer. But no, it’s gone within a day.’
Personally, she loves Napoleon and Empire styles. ‘Take Napoleon III — all those dark, almost black pieces. Because mahogany wood wasn’t allowed to leave France at the time, they would polish them to a dark finish.’
In the shop, there’s a little set she’s in love with: a Napoleon III table with two chairs. ‘It’s been there for a while. The Dutch prefer things they can use. You hang up a mirror or a painting, that’s easy. But a set like that… maybe it’s not so practical, but if you decorate it a bit, I can enjoy it so much.’
